How to Plan an Engagement Session that feels like YOU

An engagement session should never feel like checking a box on your wedding to-do list. It should feel like a reflection of your love, your story, your style, your energy, and most importantly this is the first formal proclamation you are making to the world that both of you have decided to take on the world not as individuals, which to this point you have been doing, but together as a unified front.

At Ruwan & Diana Photography, our goal is to capture this moment of declaration and preserve it in tangible form so that you have a foundation to look back on as you look forward to the future together. So how do we do all this?

Step 1: Start with Your Story

Every couple has a rhythm, a way of being together that feels natural. Some are playful. Some are romantic. Some are calm and steady. No matter who you are together we want to make sure that this true you shines out in your images.

That’s why our process always begins with a conversation. We’ll ask about your story. Because we know that no matter how many couples we have talked with before, your story is going to be a new and unique story that we have never heard before and getting to know you and your story creates the foundation we need to create images that highlight who you are.

We want to know,

  • How did you meet?

  • What you love to do together?

  • What are the little quirks that make your relationship unique and special?

This is what shapes your session. If the two of you are foodies, maybe we start at your favorite cafe. If you love adventure, maybe we head up to the hills and find a cool backcountry location. And if the ocean calls to you, golden hour at the beach may be your style.

FAQ in Context: How far in advance should we book?

Most couples book 3-6 months before their wedding, however if you are wanting something specific like golden hour at the beach, we recommend that you book as soon as you can because factors like when low tide coincides golden hour will limit the days that we can create the shots you want. However we also understand that sometimes time moves so fast and you did not have the ability to plan things out 6 months ago. Lets have that conversation, we will guide you to alternative ways that we can create stunning images for you that you will treasure.

Step 2: Pick a Location that Inspires you

San Diego has no shortage of gorgeous spots, from coastal cliffs and beaches to tucked-away urban gems. But the right location isn’t just about scenery. Its about choosing a backdrop that feels comfortable and connected to your story.

We’ll help you weigh options, secure permits if needed, and plan timing around the best light.

FAQ in Context: Can we bring props, pets, or sentimental items?

Absolutely! Whether it’s a picnic blanket, a guitar, or your fur baby, personal touches make the session more you.

Step 3: Choose Wardrobe that Feels True to You

Clothes shouldn’t feel like a costume. They should feel like your best version of yourself.

A mistake we sometimes see people make when having their photographs taken is that they will go out and buy a new outfit just for the pictures and the first time they wear it out beyond just in the dressing room of the department store if for the photoshoot. Sometimes they get lucky and the outfit flows with the movements of their body, sometimes it doesn’t and this comes across in the images.

Before we get to the shoot we will guide you with outfit planning. What colors flatter your setting, and how to coordinate without being matchy-matchy. We also recommend that you wear your outfit a time or two even if its just around the house to see how it flows with you.

FAQ in Context: What if we feel awkward in front of the camera?

That’s exactly why we plan wardrobe and styling carefully. There are two main reasons many people feel awkward in front of the camera. One is that they don’t know who their photographer really is, or they just met them. And secondly they feel uncomfortable in their new clothes that they got just for that occasion.

The process of planning wardrobe, styling and other aspects of the photoshoot gives you the opportunity to get to know us as well as a chance for us to get to know you. We can provide you with style guides or even have a shared Pinterest board where you can collect images that inspire you and form the foundation to building your own amazing images.

Often couples will choose one formal and one casual outfit for variety, while others may have a specific look they are going for and pick an outfit to that end. In either case, we will be guiding you with prompts and direction so that you never feel stiff or posed.

Step 4: Trust the Process

On the day of your session, our job is to make sure you feel relaxed, connected, and guided. We’ll direct you when needed, but also leave space for authentic moments to unfold. Is there a cool boulder you just have to climb up on? Sure, lets make sure its safe, and make that image.

Many couples tell us afterwards:

“It didn’t feel like a photoshoot, it felt like a date we’ll never forget”

FAQ in Context: Do you help with Hair and Makeup?

Yes, we have several talented hair and makeup artist that we have vetted and have worked with in the past. Several of our packages include their services to make your day less stressful and more enjoyable.

Step 5: Imagine the End Result

Planning doesn’t stop at the session. Because we know the intent of your portraits in advance, which was discussed at our first consultation, whether is it wall art, an heirloom album, or save-the-date cards, we capture with the final artwork in mind.

FAQ in Context: Can the photographs be used for wedding stationary?

Yes! Many couples use engagement portraits for save-the-date, guest books, and even reception decore.
